A Good Digital Video Camera For My Needs?

Question by Jeff: A Good Digital Video Camera For My Needs?
I would like to find a digital video camera that meets my needs. I will use it for taking family videos and such, but I will also be using it to post video (and audio) of my daughter, who is an unsigned vocalist, on websites such as YouTube. Since one of my purposes is to record a vocalist, the audio may be just as important as the video. Since I will be posting to YouTube and such, does the sound quality really need to be that good? What is a good camera for this purpose that does not cost a ton of money? Thank you for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by Little Dog
Since we don’t know how loud your daughter can sing, it would probably best if you had some way to control the audio level being recorded. You have two options: 1) Use a camera/camcorder that has manual audio control. As far as I know, there is no DSC or DSLR that has manual audio control (and they are mono, not stereo, audio). Most consumer grade camcorders do not have manual audio control. Some Sony consumer camcorders have a “MicRefLevel” menu selection that allows you to change from “Normal” to “Low” gain (for high audio levels). The least expensive camcorder – of which I am currently aware – that has more granular manual audio control is the Canon HV30.2) Use whatever camera/camcorder you want – and also use an audio “field recorder” like those from Zoom, M-Audio, Edirol, Sony, Tascam and MANY others. They have manual audi control. When you import the video from the camera, import the audio from the field recorder. Sync. Mute the audio captured by the camera/camcorder. Save, Exprt at full quality, Import and edit your new “source video/audio”.If you decide to stay with the camcorder’s built-in automatic mic gain control, and if the audio recorded is loud (it does not have to be amplified), there is a strong liklihood that the audio track in the camcorder will be over-saturated and sound can end up very muddy. Another item is when the audio peaks, there will be clipping – this can sound like static. None of these can be repaired in editing – but the audio can be replaced if correctly recorded off-board (with a field recorder or some other audio recording device).Just because the target is YouTube does not mean you get to take short cuts on video and audio production quality, editing or rendering.”cost a ton of money” will mean different things to different people.=> up to $ 250 are pocket cams: small lenses and imaging chips (poor low-light behavior), no manual audio controls, no mic jacks.=> up to $ 600: entry level consumer grade. small lenses and imaging chips (poor low-light behavior), no manual audio controls, some have mic jacks (Canon FS series).=> up to about $ 1,200: mid-high end consumer grade. Most have mic jacks, most have no manual audio control (exceptions are Sony MicRefLevel rudimentary control or Canon HV30/HV40 manual control)=> up to about $ 2,500: prosumer. Larger lenses and imaging chips, OK low-light behavior, all have mic jacks and all have manual audio control.=> beyond this, professional replaces 1/8″ mic jack with XLR audio connectors.

13 New Web-conferencing Solutions Tested by Vendor-independent Portal

13 New Web-conferencing Solutions Tested by Vendor-sovereign Portal

Frankfurt, Germany (PRWEB) August 22, 2007

webconferencing-test.com, the vendor-independent Website to test and review collaboration and online-meeting tools, has put a further thirteen products through their paces. The performance of many solutions was between acceptable and good. However, a number proved to be a waste of time and money for small and mid-sized companies without a dedicated IT department. Furthermore, the weighting of test criteria has been adjusted to better reflect user-friendliness and real-world needs. This resulted in a slight change in the final scores for the five solutions featured in the comprehensive main comparison.

Comprehensive picture of the current market

webconferencing-test.com provides visibility into the Web-conferencing solutions offer. To provide a fifty-fifty more complete imaging, the following solutions were recently essayed and included on the portal: BeamYourScreen, Convenos Meeting Center, Elluminate vRoom, FastViewer, LogMeIn Free, Microsoft NetMeeting, Windows Meeting Space, spreed.com (Struktur AG), TeamViewer, Vyew (Simulat, Inc.), and Yugma. In addition, the following tools were also reviewed but not tested as they are designed primarily for large enterprises: Saba Centra Live for eMeetings, Cisco Unified MeetingPlace, Genesys Meeting Center, IBM Lotus Sametime, Interwise, and PGi NetSpoke (Premiere Global Services).

Weighting correct to reflect ease of use and real-world needs

Ease of use and real-world needs are the most important criteria for the Website’s target audience – small and mid-sized companies. As a result, the weighting of individual test categories has been adjusted – with those most relevant to user-friendliness and real-world needs accounting for a greater percentage of the overall score.

Hits and misses

The updated results of the five Web-conferencing solutions included in the comprehensive main comparison are: Citrix GoToMeeting (9.3 out of 10), WebEx MeetMeNow (9.1 out of 10), NetViewer one2meet (8.6 out of 10), Adobe Connect (8.2 out of 10), and Microsoft Office Live Meeting (7.1 out of 10). The solutions with the lowest scores were: TeamViewer (5.2 out of 10), a difficult-to-use support tool. This was followed by NetMeeting (4.9 out of 10) – which does not enable the role of presenter to be passed to another participant, and, as peer-to-peer software, is too complex technically to merit a recommendation. And Vyew brings up the rear: ungraded. It was not possible to test this solution, as key functions did not work properly.
